Visitors receive a warm welcome at St. James’, Fairmount – a small country church that stands at the junction of Grey Roads 7 and 40 in the Municipality of Grey Highlands, where it has served the faithful since 1867. Although our liturgy is traditional our style is informal, welcoming babies and young children to remain with family, and we gather in fellowship after each service. Although we cannot easily accommodate wheelchairs, a stair climber helps to make the church more accessible. Our outreach activities help feed the hungry, comfort the afflicted and further God’s work in the world.

St. James the Greater
There were two Saint James, and history does not record which of these our church was named for. We celebrate our patronal festival on July 25th, the day dedicated to St. James the Greater, who was called from his fishing nets with his brother John and was the first of the apostles to be martyred. Tradition holds that his remains were interred in Compostela, Spain, which in medieval times became a centre for pilgrims from all over Europe who walked the Camino Real to Santiago de Compostela- as many still do.
A glimpse of our history
The early settlement of Euphrasia Township in Grey County centered around the Village of Fairmount located at what is now Grey Rd. 7 and Grey Rd. 40, Anglican services were initially conducted in homes and schools by the famous Rev. Mulholland, who travelled in the area on horseback. In 1866 a 1-acre plot a mile north of the village was purchased for one dollar and in September, 1867 a small frame church opened for worship.
During the latter part of the 19th century the congregation grew with the population of pioneer settlers, including escaped slaves from the U.S.A. who sought freedom in Canada via the Underground Railway.
